I am a registered Clinical Psychologist (HPCSA Reg. no: PS0131431) who provides clinical assessment and psychotherapy to children, adolescents, adults and couples, in both English and Afrikaans.
My practice is primarily grounded within an integrative Psychodynamic framework, which means that therapy will not only focus on the reduction of symptoms but also on a deeper self-understanding as to why the particular symptoms might have developed. I regard the strength and safety of the therapeutic relationship as extremely important as it is within this relationship that personal growth and self-development usually occur. I also utilise other evidence-based psychotherapies, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Schema Therapy, according to the needs of each individual.
I work from a holistic and multi-disciplinary perspective, which means that I might refer to practitioners from other disciplines, including but not limited to, psychiatrists, neurologists, psychometrists, paediatricians, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists and audiologists, if and when necessary.
I have completed my formal academic training at Stellenbosch University where I have obtained my MA (Clinical Psychology) (2014), MA (Psychology) (2013 - 2014), BA (Hons) Psychology (2011), and Bachelor of Social Work degrees (2007 - 2010). My clinical internship was completed at Fort England Psychiatric Hospital in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape, with a specific focus on acute male and female psychiatric admissions, substance abuse treatment, community psychology and child psychology. I have completed my community service year at the Department of Corrections in George in the Southern Cape, where I focused on individual therapy and group therapy with high-risk violent offenders.
My formal DBT and Schema Therapy training was obtained in New Zealand, where I worked as a Clinical Psychologist at the New Zealand Department of Corrections for two years, before returning to my home country, South Africa, in 2019. Since May 2019, I have been working as a clinical psychologist in private practice.
I am a Counselling Psychologist (HPCSA Reg. no: PS 0084018) registered with the HPCSA. I provide assessment and psychotherapy to adolescents and adults - mainly in English. I offer both couples and family therapy, provide emotion coaching to parents of teenagers, as well as positive behaviour support for parents with children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
I grew up in Cape Town and over the past twenty years I have been fortunate to live and work in Germany, Ireland, and New Zealand. I consider myself extremely blessed being able to accompany and support incredible people on their journey of growth, discovery and healing.
I studied at the University of the Western Cape and completed my internship in 1996 at the Centre for Student Counselling. In recent years I completed further training in Dialectical Behaviour therapy and Alcohol & Other Drug (AOD/CEP) studies in Auckland.
Prior to my return to South Africa in April 2022, I worked at Whangarei hospital in the addictions and mental health team. Before that, I worked in the disability sector and the New Zealand Ministry of Education. In South Africa, I have been fortunate to work at student counselling centres at UCT, UWC and Unisa.
My approach is trauma informed, collaborative and strength enhancing, using Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) interventions.
Therapy is a safe space to share and unpack difficulties in a non-judgemental environment. Together we will identify the underlying factors contributing to difficulties and will focus on skills to adjust self-defeating thoughts, work through difficult emotions and improve the relationship you have with others and yourself.
After more than 27 years in the therapy space, I remain passionate about providing safe and ethical practice which empowers and reinforces hope.
I will work closely with you to tailor therapy to assist you with your unique individual needs. Although the following is not an exhaustive list, I can provide assistance with:
